- This book has shown me how to make really, really top quality barbecue at home. I could register for a barbecue competition this weekend and hold my own against veteran pit-masters.
On page 4 of this book, the author provides a foolproof method of how to smoke barbecue on a Weber Kettle, a piece of equipment that most of us already own (or at least our Dads' do.) this little tidbit alone is well worth the small price of this program.
On page 51, the author demonstrates the technique of trimming an uncut slab of spareribs into what is known as "St. Louis Style." Knowing how to trim your ribs like this will put you into the Semi-pro ranks.
- Finally, Mr. Anderson, on page 57 shares with us his experience at barbecue competitions. This is invaluable. You will firsthand get an understanding of what to expect at your first barbecue competition if you decide to carry your obsession with the 'que to the next level.
Of course, Competition BBQ Secrets isn't for everybody. I wish the author, Bill Anderson, would not have included the full color photos of the finished BBQ food products, especially the ribs. It took me twenty minutes to clean the saliva off my keyboard.
That being said, I feel that Competition BBQ Secrets is perfect for:
1. someone who wants to have a better understanding of what is and is not "real barbecue."
2. an outdoor chef who wants to make great smoked barbecue at home but doesn't know exactly how, and what type of equipment he should use.
3. someone who wants to enter their first barbecue competition either as an individual or as part of a team. This book is an invaluable learning tool.
